THE STUDIO
The INbtwn Studios is an interdisciplinary design practice based in Brooklyn, NY that spans interior design, industrial design, curation, and creative direction. ‘The INbtwn’ is a term that defines our approach and symbolizes the tension between opposing forces such as; bohemian opulence and essentialism, the feminine and the masculine, the storied and the new, and the hand-made and the mechanized. Founded by Colleen Newell in 2022, the Studio approaches each project as an opportunity to learn about our clients unique experience in the world resulting in the creation of spaces that are reflective of individuality and spirit.
Our work is influenced by seeing the craft of the past in a contemporary context; blending fashion, film, art, music, technology and the handmade into poetic collections and interiors. Deeply personalized through extensive research, our projects aim to conjure emotional connection through the use of layering texture, material, artworks and architectural details. Sustainable, socially responsible, and healthy processes are at the foundation of all that we create.
The Studio is forward looking. Leaning into technology and innovation is a driving force; we do this through synergistic collaborations and in partnering with master craftspeople. We leverage evolving tools to create new experiences in our work resulting in multi sensory collections + interiors.
COLLEEN NEWELL
After 20 years as an executive, designer, and multi-channel retail leader, founder and creative director, Colleen Newell established the firm in 2022. She has spent her career traveling the globe in search of beauty, a deeper understanding of cultures, and what connects us. Her passion and vision to design work that provokes imagination and challenges barriers to what is possible led her to open the studio. Her clients have included prolific individuals in the fields of entertainment, technology, business, medicine, and craft.
Prior to opening the studio, Colleen served as Executive Vice President, design + merchandising at the renowned abc carpet & home in NYC. She and her work have been featured in Architectural Digest, Vogue, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, House Beautiful, Good Day NY, Brooklyn Magazine, the NY Post + more.
Colleen is represented by FORM portfolios for product design licensing.
A large project in development for the studio is the INbtwn; a hotel, restaurant, retail, theater, and sensorial spas + baths. This is a physical to digital expression of the space between reality and fantasy; a vision to bring more wonder and magic to the hospitality and retail landscape.
